In the meeting and conference industry, sustainability awareness is noticeably increasing according to Skift.com. Olivia Galun, member of the International Organization for Professional Congressional Organizers, explains that everyone from guests to hosts and other stakeholders are all showing their interest in the agenda.

There is a much greater focus on the long-term influence of meetings nowadays and the 'throw-away mentality' is now beginning to get challenged, Galun says.

Rose Squitieri-Strickland, senior project manager at BCD Meetings & Events, implies that it is especially the younger generation who has their eyes on sustainability and CSR, and as a host, you have to think about these elements when you want to make an arrangement that matches the demand.

The organizers are also stressing the importance of an holistic approach to sustainability, involving every stage in the process from sourcing and organizing to executing the events.
